What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day this year? Sadly, I won't get to spend the day with my mom, but I'll be photographing newborns at the hospital. Spending my day taking photos of Moms and their new babies is very special. So if I can't be with my mom on Mother's Day, I think it's the next best thing!
Although many people say Mother's Day has become too commercialized, it's neat to take a look at the origin of the holiday. It was first proposed by poet Julia Ward Howe after the Civil War. Her idea was to recognize peace and protest war, while supporting mourning mothers. She organized events in Boston to honor mothers. It didn't really catch on as a holiday. Later, Ann Jarvis, who had no children, campaigned for the holiday. She worked hard to provide resources for poor mothers. It became a holiday declared by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. It is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
Enjoy some of the beautiful photos I've captured of moms over the last year. Including a selfie of me and my wonderful, caring, amazing, strong, fun Mom.
Happy Mother's Day to all the moms and moms-to-be out there! You all rock! And especially to my own mom, family, and friends who are moms....I love you!
